THE SIRE LINE: Athletico (pictured below - click on photos for video footage of this truly magnificent stallion). Ridden by Ben Schroder, had names such as Agrovorm’s Athletico and Bollvorm’s Athletico. He has proved to be a prodigious jumping horse since when he was young and he won the first three places in the Dutch Circuit. Also in the rides reserved to horses from 5 to 6 years he has frequently won the first place. He started his international career at seven years participating in the 1,35 m category and taking the 6th place in the final of the World Ride in Zangersheide. He was also the champion in the stallions’ final in Zwolle. At 8 and 9 years old he took part in the most prestigious International Rides, he won twice the Nations’ Cup, twice the GP of CSIO and took the forth place at the stallion’s ride. Atletico, when he was ten, confirmed all his qualities, he won the Absolute Dutch Ride and concluded five net circuits on the effective five.

Sire of Athletico; Athlet Z (pictured below). The grey stallion Athlet Z was the first Hanoverian to be used in Holstein breeding for many years – although while he wore the Hanoverian brand, his bloodlines were a heady continental cocktail. His sire Almé was one of the treasures of French breeding, spirited away by Belgian breeder, Leon Melchior to stand at his Zangersheide stud, before returning triumphantly to France to end his days on Bernard le Courtois’ Brullemail Stud in Normandy. However on his dam’s side, Athlet Z descends from that pillar of Hanoverian breeding, Gotthard, and on the dam line, to an even earlier pillar – Feiner Kerl.
Athlet Z confirms the view, that a poor stallion performance test does not necessarily prevent a horse becoming a great stallion. You only have to look at the stallions, Grannus, Capitol I and Grandeur, for further proof of this.
However the Holstein breeders put their trust in the enormous jumping potential of this grey stallion and strongly utilized him for breeding. Athlet Z repaid their faith, by producing performance horses with exceptional frequency. His first crop produced the world-class horse Athletico with Ludger Beerbaum and many more were to follow, including Argentinus (Otto Becker), Athlet (Willi Melliger), Amadeus (Lars Nieberg), Avion (Werner Peters &. Ludger Beerbaum), Andolph (Claudia Vasall), Montreal (Wim Schröder) and Valeska (Dr. Michael Rüping).

Athlet Z (pictured to the right), was like so many Almé Z progeny, was highly intelligent. He was the darling of his owner Maas-J. Hell, who trained him to do tricks, like retrieving canisters and whips. He spent the autumn of his life in Belgium but returned home to Holstein in 2004, where he passed away in his 26th year at the beginning of 2005.

THE DAM LINE: Corrada is by the world famous stallion CORRADO. This fabulous Holsteiner was a shooting star as a showjumper and as a sire. Referred to as an "Idol In Holstein", He achieved the best jumping index of his test lot (more than 137 points) at his stallion performance test. He achieved 10 points twice (loose jumping and aptitude for jumping in training). But he also achieved outstanding results for canter and rideability (rideability 8.0 twice). In showjumper classes Corrado progeny are almost unbeatable. Already in his first crops, he has 14 approved stallions. As a competition horse, he was always in the ribbons. In 1991, (as a 6 year old, Corrado competed in the Federal Championship for Showjumpers in Germany. He has won many Grand Prix and Nations Cup and World Cup competitions, e.g.; Aachen and Frankfurt, as well as being the German Champion Showjumper in 1994!

Corrado has won over 500,000 DM in his career and is consistently mentioned as one of Cor de la Bryere`s most important sons in addition to having the "highest competition earnings of any Cor de la Bryere offspring"! At the 1993 Elite Holsteiner sale at Neumunster, three 3 year olds by Corrado sold for an average of $60,000 each. In Germany in 1997, Corrado I progeny at 2-4 years of age were selling for over 100,000 each.

Corrado`s sire is Cor de la Bryere (Selle Francais) imported to Holstein - a true living legend in Europe. He is on the eternal top10 sires list and is a true Sire Of All Disciplines - Top International Dressage, Eventing and Showjumping winners (with an incredible jumping bascule).

Corrado`s dam-sire is Capitol I, (Holsteiner) another World Class Stallion, who is the sire or dam sire of many Top

International Showjumpers. According to the breeding value rating by the FN, Capitol I is one of the leading sires of Showjumpers in Germany today and is one of the few lines that carry the blood of Cottage Son xx. First and second place in the Aachen Grand Prix of 2000 were sired by Capitol I.

Babusche, Dam of Corrada is by the world famous stallion LORD. He won the stallion approval in 1969 and quickly became a successful sire. In 1994 alone, his progeny won over 355,000 DM in Germany. Lord’s lifetime progeny earnings exceed 3 million DM and include some of the worlds top names, including Armerica I, Top Seed (Anne Kursinski), Indeed (Anne Kursinski), Leperon, Lordon, Lord Z, Latinus, Montanus, Jump, BB Comtessa, Elmshorn, Landsohn, Lord Caletto, Ligorett and many others.

LORD was by The English stallion, Ladykiller xx, who was a success right from the start in his second career in Holstein. His first crop produced eight approved sons, including the great Landgraf; his second crop featured the licensing winner, Lord, while his third produced the German Showjumping Derby winner, Boy (ridden by Eddie Macken).

When the German Warmblood breeders in the 60s and 70s turned to the Thoroughbred for refinement and athleticism, there were a number of important stallions that played a key role in the shaping the modern sport horse – none was more significant than Ladykiller.

Ladykiller was born in England in 1961 but he was no star on the racetrack, racing three times in two years and rating only a 80.5 kilo handicap – which luckily for him, was 0.5 kilos more than the minimum required for a Thoroughbred stallion to be accepted into German breeding ranks. Before his death in 1979, he sired 35 stallion sons including the twin pillars of Holstein: Landgraf and Lord. Both it should be noted out of mares with a good percentage of Thoroughbred blood – Lord’s dam was a full blood, while Landgraf’s dam was 25% Thoroughbred. Ladykiller’s breeeding features all the usual suspects found on jumping Thoroughbred pedigrees – Blue Peter, Phalaris, Son in Law.

In his Stallion Book of the Holsteiner Warmblood Breed, Dr Dietrich Rossow had this to say about Ladykiller and his influence: "He was an averaged sized, clearly masculine type with a beautiful head, really heavy neck, good shoulder, rather flat loin, and a nicely coupled, heavily muscled croup. He had first rate legs and feet for a Thoroughbred and was an elastic mover. He was everything a state breeding program could wish for. With his 35 approved sons and 195 approved daughters, he has had the greatest impact of all on the Holsteiner breed. His best produce came through crosses with mares with some Thoroughbred blood. This was just the opposite case as with Anblick. When crossed with coarse, common mares, Laykiller produced accordingly. Today he must be viewed as one of the most important jumper sires of modern time. To enumerate all of his great performance offspring in the world of jumping goes beyond the limits of this essay. He sired fewer dressage horses. Whereas Marlon and Anblick influenced this Holsteiner modification phase more in the direction of riding horse types, Ladykiller offspring correspond more to performance, jumper types. As a rule, they are strong horses, they are not, at first, very tight with their front ends. This however, quickly improves with increasing maturity."
Despite the proliferation of C line horses in Holstein breeding, the Ladykiller line retains its pride of place, indeed Claus Schridde draws attention to its proliferation even on the one set of papers:
"Today it is almost a necessity of fashion in Holstein that a horse carries Ladykiller xx blood at least two or three times, whereby it occurs from time to time, that horses in the first generations are inbred five or six times to this invaluable foundation sire. All along, a certain measure of inbreeding has been a regular formula for success in Holstein breeding. Anyone looking more closely at Holstein bloodlines or respectively, the pedigree papers of individual horses down to the roots, is frequently taken aback about how frequently the same name literally jumps into one’s face in the earlier generations. Today, where fresh blood in Holstein does not take effect at all, continued inbreeding to the proven ‘classic’ Ladykiller xx is a piece of brinkmanship that demands a great amount of sure instinct by the breeders of Holstein." (from Selected Sires of Germany – A Yearbook of German Sires 2000.

In his review of the Holstein Upgraders, Jasper Nissen has this to say of Ladykiller as a stallion: "Passed on a good temperament, although sometimes a little hot. In spite of his early injuries he did not pass on any defects in the limbs. Produced numerous first class broodmares and licensed stallions, including the top progenitors, Landgraf I and Lord, Founded his own, wide-branched stallion line.

Ladykiller xx (pictured to the right) passed on specific characteristics, such a s a fine head, an often light brown colour with white on the legs, sometimes less coupled loins, good, powerful and correct bones, very good jumping qualities (lots of guts, power, fine technique and rounded back over the fence), excellent basic gaits and on average, good sized products; his chestnuts were often a bit more noble than his bay offspring.
