THE SIRE LINE: VOLTAIRE (video link) - Approved KWPN, Hanoverian, Selle Francais, Oldenburg. As an 8 year old Voltaire jumped 1.50m courses with a great deal of success. He showed his prowess in international show jumping in 1988 in Calgary, Stockholm, Lanaken, Helsinki, Wiesbaden and Wembley. In 1989 he brought his successful career to an end by winning the Grand Prix of Berlin. Voltaire stands very high on the index for dressage and jumping. Voltaire is the result of crossing two outstanding bloodlines, Furioso II and Gotthard. Furioso II produced 200 state premium mares and at least 68 approved stallions of which several are standing at stud in other continents. One can easily say that Furioso II has influenced the breeding industry world-wide.

Voltaire was really the first of the super star performance stallions to go on and prove himself equally as important as a breeding stallion. In the competition arena, he won at the highest level, winning Nations Cup classes at Calgary, Stockholm, Shertogenbosch, Lanaken, Helsinki, Wiesbaden and Wembley. In 1989 he won the Grand Prix of Berlin. And yet he was a horse that no-one wanted! He was a bit small (just 162 cms) and had a problem with one hoof, and he was rejected by the Oldenburg licensing commission. That didnt deter Jan Greve, a Dutch veterinarian with a passion for breeding jumping horses and his partner, Henk Nijhoff. They heard that the young stallion was for sale, liked his technique and took him home to The Netherlands. The KWPN licensing commission was not much more enthusiastic than their Oldenburg counterparts, Voltaire was graded 14th out of the fourteen horses to complete the performance test. He received excellent marks for jumping (and stable manners!) but just made it to stallion status.

After a sensational performance career, Voltaire stood at Jan Greves picturesque stud De Watermolen, dominated by an ancient mill and water wheel, Voltaire started to prove that his explosive mix of the best of the French and the best of the German jumping lines, could weave a special magic. Voltaire is by Furioso II, one of the first Selle Français stallions to come to Germany.

Originally called Vertuoso, the two and a half year old French stallion was imported to Germany by the great Oldenburg breeder, Georg Vorwerk. Voltaire is out of Gogo Moeve by the great Hanoverian stallion, Gotthard. Gogo Moeve was the dam of successful competition horses Fandango R, PS Falkan and Petite Fleur. Her dam sire is the English Thoroughbred, More Magic xx, who was the sire of 1980 Moscow Olympic dressage gold medallist, Mon Cherie. Out of his first crop of foals Voltaire produced the approved stallion, Concorde, who after an international jumping career with Jos Lansink and Eric van der Vleuten (including the Dutch showjumping championship in 1994) is in the process of writing his name into the history books as a breeding stallion in his own right.

Voltaire is represented by a staggering 28 jumpers in the WBFSH standings for 2000/2001 - and is ranked 9th in the top 50 sires in the ten years from 1991 to 2000. Jacques Verkerk of the KWPN, comments: "Voltaire produces roughly two types of horse; rather square exteriors with an articulate top-line or big rectangular horses with a lot of bone. His progeny move with sufficient length of pace, but are a little slow and without optimum bend in hocks. The hind leg is often a little straight. Due to their nice type and good character a lot of riders can easily cope with them. They can make quite nice dressage horses for riders at rural level, although the KWPN doesnt recognize him as a producer of dressage horses.

FURIOSO II died in 1986 having sired 81 approved sons, 96 dams of approved sons, and progeny earnings of DM9,000,000. He was imported to Germany by the legendary Oldenburg breeder, George Vorwerk (father of Gudula Vorwerk who stands a string of stallions, including - until his death, Rubinstein). Furioso II was out of the great mare, Dame de Renville, who produced a series of wonderful horses when mated with Furioso. The first of these was Mexico, who standing at the French National Stud of Le Pin, sired 20 approved sons, 20 dams of stallions, and famous international showjumping horses, including Laeken, Jexico de Parc and Heur de Bratand. His son, Le Mexico, has been a hugely influential sire of jumping horses in Holland.
Furioso II was interesting to the Oldenburg breeders as they needed a half-blood stallion to help make the transformation of their mares to more modern lines, without too much direct Thoroughbred blood. He was approved for the Oldenburg studbook in 1967, and then went on to easily win his 100 day test. Later he was approved for Hannover, Rhineland, Hessen and Westfalia. For many years, Furioso II was ranked in the top three sires of leading money winners in Germany. Furioso II had winners in all disciplines. His showjumping stars included: FBI (with Thomas Frühmann), Heissman (ridden by Eric Van Der Vleuten, then Michael Matz) and For Pleasure.
Heissman under his original name, Friesengeist was sold to the stables of Henk Nooren, who later sold him to the United States, when ridden by Michael Matz he was Horse of the Year, and 4th at the Barcelona Olympics.
For Pleasure was originally ridden by Lars Nieberg, and under his guidance won team gold at Atlanta, before the ride was transferred to Marcus Ehnning. For Pleasure is already the sire of eight licensed Hanoverian stallions, and was a member of the gold medal winning German team at the Sydney Olympic Games.
Perhaps Furioso II’s most influential son is Voltaire - out of a mare by another classic sire of jumping horses, Gotthard,. Voltaire is the sire of 33 approved sons and top jumpers like Finesse and Altaire.
In dressage, his son, Purioso is the sire of numerous stars including Anky van Grunsven’s Grand Prix horse Cocktail (who is the sire of Jazz); Le Mexico is the sire of Ulft, who in turn is the sire of Ferro. The Oldenburg stallion Welt as is out of a Furioso II daughter, and is the sire of Anky’s gold medallist Bonfire and Christine Stückelberger’s Grand Prix horse, STC Diamond.

Even now, Furioso II continues to shape the sport of showjumping. In the 2007/2008 edition of the French breeding reference a ranking of the top 75 jumping stallions in the world - based on the FEI results of 2515 horses competing at CSI level. Furioso II's son Voltaire is ranked 11th in the world with 19 CSI winners, while For Pleasure despite largely concentrating on a competition rather than a breeding career, ranks 13th with 11 representatives.

THE DAM LINE: RENATE: Orsina' Dam was a Ster mare, that went to the European championships and had a good career as an International Showjumper with Christophe David of Belgium. She was by Uppercut (pictured below).

UPPERCUT

This great Thoroughbred is the sire of the international jumper The Saint, ridden by Alwin Schockemohle of Germany. Uppercut's sire, Fighting Don, was a grandson of *Sir Gallahad III. Fighting Don also descends from the Rock Sand line.

Renate's dam Nersina is by the great FARN. This famous "SINA" bloodline is listed in the book "The leading mares of the Netherlands" by Jacob Melissen / Jac Remijnse and is a famously successful mare line. Orsina herself is listed in this book.

HISTORY OF FARN: One misty morning, the first of November 1962, a NWP committee visited the performance test in Westercelle, Germany. There was a 31/2-yr-oid Holstein stallion that met their approval. They hoped that the animal, called Farn, would generate fine daughters, broodmares that would help upgrade Dutch breeding. We all know that Farn did so, and even more. He also supplied sons and descendants that would continue the Farn dynasty, as well as provide the sport, the jumping sport in particular, with a large number of cracks. Farn is fourth of the Dutch jumping index. Of the three stallions preceding him, one is his own son Nimmerdor.

Farn's history runs parallel to the history of the beginning of Dutch riding horse breeding. In the early sixties one had begun to transform the heavy agricultural horse into a type with more riding-horse qualities. In the beginning of the fifties the first, tentative steps had been taken in that direction, by introducing some twenty, carefully selected Holstein mares. Thoroughbred blood had already been introduced on a minor scale, when Farn was brought to the Netherlands by the 'BOG combination' (Boelens, Oosterbaan and Gerbens). Farn, with his solid appearance, easily won the confidence of Dutch breeders, who had difficulty getting used to the lighter type of Trakehner Marco Polo and the part-bred Uniek. These long-lined stallions were booed at and called 'goats', when they were presented at stallion shows. Ten years later, the tables were turned. Although Farn had produced good broodmares, specifically around Surhuisterveen, the breeders in the north lost interest in the stallion.

In the south, however, the heavy stallion was received enthusiastically. Southern breeders had almost been overshooting their mark, when trying to generate a fine riding-horse with intensive use of thoroughbred blood, which had resulted in loss of size, and funny necks. They wanted to restore volume and bone. Farn broke the service records. In 1979 he was offered 236 mares. In 1978 he had been awarded the 'keur' predicate, in 1991 he was declared 'preferent', seven years after his death. He left eleven approved sons, 123 Ister', 31 'keur', 14 'preferent' and 6 'prestatie' mares. At the 1993 KWPN stallion examination Farn lineages were most prominent, particularly through Nimmerdor, Farn's most famous son, who had long since been declared 'preferent' and leading stallion of the jumping index. Fanfare and Felix are examples from one of his first seasons, as is Garant (x Flipper) who had become 'keur'. His later seasons generated Safari, Telstar, Uddel, Uirich, Ufarno and latter's full brother Amulet, and Wolfgang.

Farn's famous daughters include Viola, awarded double 'preferent' and double 'prestatie' in 1993 and dam of, amongst others, the approved stallion Topas. Another pillar of the breeding industry was Oloma, 'preferent prestatie' foundation mare of the "-ioma" lineage. Then there were 'keur preferent' Sakilly and Limburg Champion Salena in the south, considered prototypes of Farn daughters. Salena produced the international showjumpers Zargo Z and Bokilly. Some of the best sport horses born out of Farn daughters were, no doubt, Helena Weinberg-Dickinson's Just Malone, by Erdball xx out of Catweazle, and Renville ridden by Bert Romp. But the most famous Farn descendant in the sport is Felix, Maykel x Farn, penetrating the international top and claiming 1989 European bronze under Jos Lansink. Direct Farn products in the sport are, for example, Amor (Wout-Jan van der Schans), Black and White Design, Opstalans Pasquino and Optiebeurs Investment.

THE GREAT: FARN

The valuable qualities that Farn bestowed on his descendants were power and ability, and a strong will, that will give their last. Giving just that little bit more is what makes Farn descendants superior, rock-hard horses, full of courage.
